About Dr Mboyi
Dr Ntomboxolo Mboyi was born in Bizana a village in the Eastern Cape (South Africa). With an upbringing deeply rooted in spirituality from her Christian parents, she knew God at a young age and that has carried her throughout her life and career. The path to medicine was rocky and full of diversions but she was more than determined to excel against all odds becoming the first black female oncologist in South Africa and the best at what she does.
She matriculated at St James High School and went on to study Bachelor of Science (BSc) at the University of KwaZulu Natal (UKZN) majoring in microbiology and biochemistry and graduated in 1993. She then furthered her studies at the Medical University of South Africa (MEDUNSA) completing her MBcHB in 1998. It was during her community service at Leratong Hospital in 2000 when a colleague strongly recommended radiation oncology as a speciality, which she decided to go ahead with after careful consideration.
In 2001, Dr Mboyi was employed as a registrar in oncology at Charlotte Maxeke Hospital which is the best oncology training centre and became a fellow in radiation oncology with the Colleges of Medicine South Africa (CMSA) in 2006. She worked as a consultant there until 2008 when she ventured into private practice at Gauteng Oncology where she gained vast experience in prostate brachytherapy and prostate cancer in general. In fact, she has a proven track record of doing over 500 cases of prostate brachytherapy with good results, of which some will be published in the Journal of Contemporary Brachytherapy. She also specialises in breast, gynaecological and colorectal cancers which she finds it particularly fulfilling treating them as they are usually curable.
Dr Mboyi is involved in a number of different cancer awareness campaigns and can often be heard on radio or seen on television representing the cause, enjoys giving educational talks at corporate, clinics, churches and townships. She is a member of South African Oncology Consortium (SAOC), South African Society of Clinical and Radiation oncology (SASCRO), American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) and American Brachytherapy Society (ABS) and a Chairperson of the board of CanSurvive (non-profit organisation offering support to cancer patients).
Her passion for research and being intimately involved in finding treatment and cure for cancer have led her to further her studies abroad. She obtained a Postgraduate qualification in Cancer Biology and Therapeutics at Harvard Medical School in 2018 which is a High Impact Cancer Research Program.
Dr Mboyi is grateful for the privilege and honour of being an oncologist, it is a great responsibility that brings her deep satisfaction and teaches her the virtue of humility. The opportunity and capacity to engage another human being during one of the most vulnerable and scary times in their lives is a unique blessing and can’t tell how many times it has changed her life.
Being constantly exposed to the fears, anxiety and pain of her patients has led Ntombi to take up yoga, meditation and exercise which helps her to relax, channel her emotions and regain perspective. She enjoys spending time with her family, playing golf, reading and travelling. She believes that in the end, we are our choices and we must build a good story for ourselves.
About Dr Ncumisa Ndamase
Qualifications: MB ChB (UL), FC Rad Onc (SA), Mmed (Wits)
Specialisation: Specialist Radiation Oncologist
Dr. Ncumisa Ndamase is a passionate Radiation Oncologist providing quality care to all cancer patients through innovative technology. She graduated from the University of Limpopo – MEDUNSA campus in 2006 with Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery. She completed training as a Radiation Oncologist with the Colleges of Medicine of South Africa and became an admitted Fellow of the College of Radiation Oncologists of South Africa. Dr. Ndamase further holds Master of Medicine in Radiation Oncology.
She specialises in treatment of adult solid tumours with special interest in prostate, breast and gynaecological using latest radiation technology – including intensity – modulated radiotherapy (IMRT) high dose rate brachytherapy (HDR), stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) and stereotactic radiotherapy SBRT). She also has several years of experience using chemotherapeutic agents, targeted therapy and immunotherapy.
She is a member of South African Society of Clinical and Radiation Oncologists (SASCRO), European Society for Medical Oncology (ESMO).
She is actively involved in cancer advocacy and education. She has passion for clinical research with focus in finding best treatment for cancer, quality of life and issues of cancer survivorship.
She is passionate about contributing her part in reducing the burden of cancer in Africa.

Dr Mboyi went into private practice in 2008 and over the years she gained vast experience in multiple areas, especially prostate brachytherapy, working with phenomenal colleagues, mentors and leaders in the oncology field.
The immense knowledge gained, resilient attitude, and hardworking nature laid the groundwork for her to start Dr Mboyi Inc. in 2012. It is her confident leadership and grounded optimism, kind approach and passion to care for people that the practice has grow enormously since inception servicing not just South Africans but the continent as a whole. Her ultimate goal is to cure cancer one patient at a time.
The Partners
Dr Mboyi consults primarily from Busamed Modderfontein Private Hospital Orthopaedic & Oncology Centre – a proudly South African private hospital group offering friendly, cost-effective and innovative healthcare service in a safe and caring environment. The main reason why Dr Mboyi consults from Busamed is because the centre is fully equipped to provide brachytherapy, radiation and chemotherapy treatments.
Dr Mboyi has partnered with Mindful Eating Dietician Consultancy to provide dietary advice and healthy eating plans specifically tailored to suit each patient’s unique needs. The Johannesburg-based Consultancy has helped over 2500 people since the reputable practice started in 2012. The dieticians are not only highly qualified and experienced in nutrition, but also have backgrounds in psychology and counselling.
Lereko Tserane is the physiotherapist (PR No. 0035513) that Dr Mboyi has been referring all her patients to for physiotherapy since 2008. He has a BSc Physio with Honours qualification from Medunsa (Medical University of Southern Africa, which is now University of Limpopo) and special interest in treating and rehabilitating oncology patients. Lereko typically assesses patient files and provides a report indicating whether or not patients require.
Kgalema Psychological practice provides counselling and emotion support to out patients and it based at Busamed, Sunninghill and Waterfall Hospital.
